He lived with his roommate and relative, Gilberto Gonzalez, in an apartment on Irvington Road and the two worked together at a local clothing store. On January 20, 1996, both Jose and Gilberto were seen for the last time. Their sudden and silent disappearance would leave a void filled only with unsettling questions for their families and investigators. The following day, they were scheduled to open the store where they were employed, but they never arrived. This uncharacteristic absence was the first sign that something was terribly wrong. Concern for the two men grew, prompting a check on their apartment. What was discovered inside only deepened the mystery. The front door to their residence was unlocked, and inside, it appeared as though they had just stepped out. The keys were left behind, and the vehicle they shared, provided by their employer, was parked nearby. Crucially, all of their personal belongings remained in the apartment, with no indication of a struggle or any kind of disturbance. It was as if they had vanished into thin air, leaving behind the tangible pieces of their lives. Jose was known to wear a gold chain, a watch, and a distinctive high school class ring from a Phoenix-area school, which featured a large green stone setting. Both of his ears were also pierced. The circumstances surrounding the dual disappearance of Jose Chavez and Gilberto Gonzalez were immediately deemed suspicious by authorities. The fact that both men went missing simultaneously, leaving all their possessions and transportation behind, pointed away from a voluntary departure.
