On the morning of April 10, 1996, in the Oakland Park neighborhood of Columbus, Georgia, 81-year-old Oliver Monroe Smith informed his wife that he was stepping into their backyard. His stated intention was to plant zinnias, a simple task that should have only taken a few minutes. However, he never returned and was never heard from again.
