Sandra Jacobson, age 36, and her 5-year-old son John disappeared on November 16, 1996, from Bismarck, North Dakota. That evening, Sandra had dinner plans at her mother’s home. On the way, she made a troubling call to the Bismarck Police Department, claiming she had witnessed satanic ritual abuse occurring at a farm near Center, North Dakota. She expressed distrust of local law enforcement, which is why she contacted the Bismarck police instead.
Upon arrival at her mother’s house, Sandra appeared to be in a distressed state, prompting her mother to suggest taking her to a hospital. However, before doing so, Sandra decided to get gasoline with her son John.
Sandra and John never returned, and later that evening, her vehicle, a gray Honda Civic, was discovered abandoned near Centennial Beach by the Missouri River. The driver’s side door was left open, and her purse remained on the seat, undisturbed, with only her driver's license missing. Searches of the river were hindered by adverse weather conditions, and while a shoe believed to belong to John was found, no other trace of them was ever discovered.
At the time of her disappearance, Sandra was involved in a separation from her husband, Alan Jacobson. Although Alan stated he had been away on a business trip, investigators could not confirm his alibi. He was uncooperative during parts of the investigation, refusing to provide a DNA sample, and later removed items from Sandra’s home, complicating further inquiries.
