A graduate of Central York High School in Pennsylvania, he was studying mechanical engineering and had recently been inducted into the elite Pershing Rifles ROTC unit. On Saturday, April 11, 1998, the day before Easter, Jason spoke with his mother on the phone, sounding happy and proud of his recent accomplishment.
Later that evening, he was at his apartment in the 100 block of Calhoun Street in Clemson, which he shared with roommates. They had rented a movie together, and at about 10:30 p.m., his roommates left him alone to finish watching it. This would be the last time anyone is known to have seen him. At the time of his disappearance, he was believed to be wearing a t-shirt, blue jeans, and blue sneakers.
Concern grew when days passed without any word from Jason, who typically spoke with his mother daily. After nearly a week, his roommates contacted his parents, who then reported him missing to the authorities on April 17th. The search for Jason began, and a significant break in the case came on April 21st, when his white 1990 Chevrolet Beretta was found abandoned. The locked vehicle was parked in a rugged area of Table Rock State Park in Pickens, South Carolina, approximately 30 miles from the Clemson campus. Inside the car, investigators found untouched items, including takeout bags from Wendy's, a six-pack of root beer, and a bottle of orange juice. A crucial piece of evidence was a park pass purchased on Easter Sunday, between 3 and 5 p.m., which had Jason's fingerprints on it. This was the only definitive proof that he had made it to the park. He had made a $20 withdrawal from his bank account on the day he disappeared, and there has been no activity on his accounts since.
The discovery of Jason's car initiated one of the most extensive search efforts in the history of Table Rock State Park. For two weeks, search and rescue teams, including volunteer firefighters, the Pickens Rescue 7, staff from Greenville Water, and state park rangers, combed through the vast and rugged 3,000-acre wilderness. The search was exhaustive, involving cadaver dogs, helicopters, and divers who even searched the park's lake. Despite these intensive efforts, which amounted to over 3,400 hours of searching, not a single trace of Jason was ever found. The case was further complicated by the fact that Jason was not an experienced hiker and did not own any camping equipment, making his presence at the difficult hiking area a mystery to his family. His mountain bike, which he enjoyed riding, was not with him. The trail to Table Rock's summit is a challenging one, and it seemed unlikely to those involved in the search that an inexperienced hiker in street clothes would have attempted it without being noticed. Over the years, the case grew cold, though investigators continued to follow up on any potential leads. The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children has released age-progressed photos of Jason to keep his image in the public eye. After two decades with no answers, Jason's parents made the difficult decision to have him legally declared deceased in January 2018.
