On a Tuesday afternoon, August 22, 2000, 39-year-old Joey Gale Ledlow finished his workday in Phoenix, Arizona, and was last seen near 24th Street and Roosevelt. He left his job around 2:30 p.m. and then vanished. At the time of his disappearance, he was wearing a t-shirt and blue Levi's jeans. His wife, Rochelle, grew concerned and reported him missing, stating that he would not have willingly left behind his young daughter. The days turned into weeks with no word from Joey, deepening the mystery surrounding his sudden absence.

A significant development in the case came a month later, in September 2000, when Joey's vehicle was discovered abandoned. The truck was found in a desert area in Avondale, about twenty miles west of Phoenix. The vehicle had been trashed, but there was no sign of Joey at the scene, leaving his family and investigators with more questions than answers. The discovery of his abandoned truck suggested that his disappearance might have involved foul play.

At the time he went missing, Joey was on parole for a robbery charge, and a warrant was subsequently issued for a parole violation after his disappearance. This has led to speculation about whether his past had any connection to him going missing, or if he may have chosen to disappear. Despite these circumstances, those close to him do not believe he would have voluntarily abandoned his family.
