On a winter day in January of 2001, 19-year-old Male Anwar Green and his friend, Rahim Martin, also 19, made their way to the Independence Community Bank on Broad and Academy streets in Newark, New Jersey. The purpose of their trip was to cash a substantial check that Martin had received from a civil lawsuit, amounting to over $8,000.
