On a winter day in January of 2001, 19-year-old Male Anwar Green and his friend, Rahim Martin, also 19, made their way to the Independence Community Bank on Broad and Academy streets in Newark, New Jersey. The purpose of their trip was to cash a substantial check that Martin had received from a civil lawsuit, amounting to over $8,000. Surveillance footage from inside the bank captured the two young men, with Anwar appearing noticeably anxious, his eyes repeatedly darting towards the door.
After successfully cashing the check, they left the bank. Another check, for $4,000, which had also been issued to Martin, was never cashed.
From the bank, Anwar and Rahim walked to the nearby Prudential Building on Broad Street, a place where Martin had previously been employed as a security guard. Inside the lobby, Martin used a pay phone to call his uncle, who was working in the building at the time. They spoke briefly, but the two friends left without ever physically meeting with the uncle. This phone call would be the last known contact anyone had with either Male Anwar Green or Rahim Martin. Neither of the young men held a driver's license and often relied on others for transportation. In the days that followed their disappearance, there was no activity on Anwar's credit cards, and his cell phone was left behind, which was uncharacteristic for the young man who was known to be close with his family.
The day after Anwar and Rahim were reported missing, a grim discovery was made in a burned-out house in Newark. The bodies of two individuals were found, and it was determined that they had been murdered before the house was intentionally set on fire. For years, the identities of the victims remained a mystery. In August of 2010, one of the bodies was positively identified as Rahim Martin. However, the second body found at the scene remains unidentified, and Male Anwar Green is still officially listed as a missing person. Due to the large sum of money they were carrying, investigators have long theorized that robbery was a motive in their disappearance. The case is characterized by a profound sense of loss and a lingering lack of closure for Anwar's loved ones, who continue to await answers.
