In the winter of 2001, 35-year-old Sharon Shechter, a mother of three, disappeared from Perinton, New York, leaving behind a life that was in the midst of a difficult transition. On December 9, 2001, she spoke with her mother around noon, outlining her plan to pick up her children from her estranged husband's home later that day. After some holiday shopping and dinner with a friend in Macedon, New York, Sharon was last seen at her Nettlecreek Road home at approximately 5:00 p.m. as she went inside to turn on her Christmas lights. She was never heard from again. At the time of her disappearance, she was wearing a white Cape Cod sweatshirt, blue jeans, a long blue denim jacket, and athletic shoes. Concerns for Sharon's welfare grew when she failed to show up for her job on December 10. It was her coworkers who reported her missing, not her estranged husband, Alan Shechter, who had the children for the weekend. Three days later, on December 12, Sharon's red 1992 Dodge Caravan was found abandoned in the parking lot of a Days Inn motel in Gates, New York. Inside the vehicle, investigators discovered blood, although it has not been publicly confirmed if it was Sharon's. There was no indication that she had been a guest at the motel, and no witnesses recalled seeing her there. The investigation into Sharon's disappearance revealed a troubled marital history. She and her husband, Alan, were going through a contentious divorce. In 2000, Sharon had obtained an order of protection against him, and he was later charged with criminal contempt for violating it. The divorce was reportedly just days away from being finalized when she vanished. In the years following her disappearance, the case has been reclassified as a suspected homicide, though her body has never been found. The Monroe County Sheriff's Office has continued to investigate, looking into various leads, but the case remains unsolved. The disappearance of Sharon Shechter is a story of a mother taken from her children during what should have been a festive time of year, a case marked by a troubled marriage and a disturbing discovery that left a family and community with more questions than answers.
