Sharon Shechter, age 35, was last seen on December 9, 2001, in Perinton, New York. She was in the process of a contentious divorce from her estranged husband, Alan Shechter, and had received a protective order against him the year before. Sharon was last seen by a friend at around 5:00 p.m. at her home on Nettlecreek Road, where she went inside to activate the holiday lights. She had plans to pick up her three children from Alan's residence later that day but never arrived.

Her red 1992 Dodge Caravan was found three days later on December 12, abandoned in the parking lot of a Days Inn motel in Gates, New York. Blood was found inside the vehicle, but it has not been publicly confirmed if the blood belonged to Sharon. No one at the motel recalled seeing her, and she had not registered as a guest.

Despite extensive investigations, including questioning a person of interest—a man with a criminal background—Sharon's case remains unsolved. Authorities continue to classify her disappearance as suspicious.
