Timmy Gene Thompson, 36 years old, was last seen on August 3, 2002, at his residence in Phelan, California. He had plans to embark on a three-day camping trip in the Salton Sea area and intended to travel along the Colorado Aqueduct to a houseboat he owned near the Colorado River, close to Park Moabi, southeast of Needles, California. However, Thompson never arrived at his destination, and he has not been heard from since.
Six weeks after his disappearance, on September 23, 2002, Thompson's vehicle, a light golden-brown 1986 Buick Skylark, was discovered abandoned in the desert, four miles off Highway 177. The car was disabled, and a campsite was found nearby. At the campsite, authorities located some of Thompson's belongings, including a can of beer, a knife, and a pack of cigarettes. Despite multiple searches, no signs of Thompson were found in the vicinity of his vehicle or the campsite.
Thompson was an experienced outdoorsman who enjoyed camping in remote desert areas. His disappearance was particularly concerning to his family, as they described him as someone who would normally stay in contact. He had recently quit his job as a foreman at a telecommunications company just days before he vanished. Despite thorough investigations, there has been no activity on his phone, driver's license, or Social Security number since his disappearance, and his case remains unsolved.
