He had left behind his wife and child for this new life. On June 24, 2005, he was staying with roommates at a house near Route 34 and Cowell Road. That morning, he mentioned to a neighbor that he needed to go to the Department of Motor Vehicles in the nearby city of Ithaca to return the license plates from his car, as the vehicle was no longer insured. He also told his friends he was heading into town. Edward Tandler was never seen or heard from again. He was officially reported missing six days later, on June 30. The circumstances surrounding Edward's disappearance were immediately concerning to investigators. In a move that suggested he did not intend to be gone for long, if at all, he left behind all of his personal possessions. Among the items left at the residence were his car, his driver's license, and his former postal service identification. Also left behind were photographs of his daughter, his prized mineral collection, and essential medication for a skin condition he had. This collection of abandoned personal effects painted a grim picture, suggesting that his departure was not planned. At the time of his disappearance, he was described as a white male with brown hair, standing at 5'10" and weighing around 160 pounds. He wore wire-framed eyeglasses and was last seen in a white t-shirt and gray sweatpants. Further investigation into Edward's life in Spencer revealed a connection to a man named Abraham Shorey, who was a person of interest in a series of local crimes. Shorey was a suspect in over 20 break-ins and assaults that had occurred in the Collegetown area of Ithaca, targeting women at Cornell University between 2003 and 2004. After being charged, Shorey fled while out on bail. During this time, Edward had provided assistance to Shorey's fiancée and her six children. After Edward's disappearance, Shorey was apprehended in California. While law enforcement noted that Shorey was reportedly not in the Ithaca or Spencer area at the exact time Edward went missing, there has been speculation about his potential involvement in the case. Despite this lead and the passage of many years, the case remains unsolved. The disappearance of Edward Tandler is a perplexing case characterized by a man who seemingly walked away from his life, leaving behind everything he owned, with his last known intention being a simple errand to the DMV.
