In the winter of 1983, the life of 37-year-old Edward Edgar Nye took a dramatic and mysterious turn. On February 21st of that year, he was last seen on New Scotland Avenue in Albany, New York. At the time, Nye was a man of varied pursuits, known to work as a carpet installer and auto mechanic, and he also played guitar in a country-western band. Described as a white male, standing between 5'10" and 6'0" and weighing around 200 to 220 pounds, he had brown hair, brown eyes, a scar on his abdomen, and a notably youthful appearance. His disappearance, however, was not a simple case of a person who vanished without a trace; it was deeply entangled with a serious criminal case and a subsequent escape from custody. Prior to his disappearance, Edward Nye was facing significant legal troubles. In January 1982, he was arrested in Canaan, New York, on 30 counts of serious sexual misconduct involving minors at a school for young boys where he had been employed as a counselor. In 1983, Nye pleaded guilty to these charges in Columbia County Court. Before he could be sentenced, he was committed to the Capital District Psychiatric Hospital in Albany due to reported suicidal tendencies. Just four days into his commitment, Nye walked away from the facility. An apparent clerical error that changed his status from "in-patient" to "out-patient" allowed him to leave the center freely. Following his departure from the psychiatric facility, Nye's whereabouts became a matter of intense speculation and the subject of a prolonged manhunt. He was classified as one of New York State's 12 Most Wanted Fugitives, and in 1989, an Unlawful Flight to Avoid Confinement warrant was issued against him. For a brief period after he left the hospital, Nye contacted a private detective and his lawyer to ask if his sentence could be set aside, but he was told it could not. After that phone call, he vanished completely. Law enforcement authorities questioned his family members throughout Upstate New York on multiple occasions, but it is believed he may not have stayed in the state for long, with some speculating he might have fled to Canada.
