In the fall of 2005, a 29-year-old woman from Miami, Florida named Rossana Miliani embarked on a vacation to the mountains of North Carolina. On November 26, 2005, she was last seen in Bryson City, a small town nestled in Swain County. At the time of her disappearance, Rossana, also known by her nickname "Sassy," was described as a White female with brown hair and brown eyes, standing at approximately 5'8" and weighing 220 pounds. She had several distinguishing features, including a tattoo of a lotus flower with Chinese letters on her lower back, a small birthmark on her chin, and double-pierced ears. When she was last seen, she was reportedly carrying a large, light beige suitcase with a broken handle, a matching carry-on bag, and a laptop computer. She may have also been wearing a white gold diamond solitaire ring and a white gold pendant with a yellow stone. The circumstances surrounding Rossana's disappearance are unsettling. On December 7, 2005, she was seen at a Ramada Inn in Cherokee, North Carolina. From the hotel, she made a phone call to her father, telling him of her plans to go hiking on the Appalachian Trail. That same day, she rented a storage unit in Bryson City. A significant lead in the case emerged years later when a store clerk came forward. The clerk recalled selling a backpack to Rossana and an unidentified man, whom she described as being in his 60s with graying hair at his temples. The clerk noted that Rossana appeared nervous during the transaction. This man reportedly identified himself as a traveling preacher. The description of this man and the circumstances have led investigators to consider a possible link to Gary Michael Hilton, a drifter and convicted serial killer known to frequent national forests in the southeastern United States. While he is considered a person of interest, no definitive evidence has proven his involvement in Rossana's disappearance. The investigation into Rossana Miliani's disappearance has been a collaborative effort between the Broward County Sheriff's Office in Florida and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation. Despite the passage of time, her case remains unsolved, and foul play is suspected. No activity has been recorded on her bank accounts since she went missing, and none of her personal belongings have ever been recovered. The lack of concrete evidence and the mysterious circumstances of her last known interactions have left her family with unanswered questions and a profound sense of loss. The case is a haunting reminder of the vulnerability of individuals and the enduring pain experienced by the loved ones of the missing.
