Janet Gould DeFelice, aged 88, was last seen in the early morning hours of June 1, 2007, at her son’s residence on Santa Rita Ranch Road in Templeton, California. She had recently moved from her home in Costa Mesa to live with her son, a move she was reportedly unhappy about. DeFelice was last heard from during a phone conversation at 2:30 a.m., but when her son woke up at 7:00 a.m., she was missing.
Her disappearance was especially concerning due to her symptoms of early-stage dementia and arthritis.
At the time she went missing, DeFelice was wearing a red fleece pullover, black sweatpants, and white sneakers. She had only a small amount of cash and no credit cards. Despite being physically fit for her age, walking up to five miles a day, an extensive search of the surrounding area yielded no clues. Two years later, in July 2009, her purse was found under a bush about a quarter mile from her son’s home, but no further evidence was discovered.
DeFelice’s case remains unsolved. She had been set to move into a nursing home shortly after her disappearance, but she expressed a desire to return to her former home in Costa Mesa.
