On a summer afternoon in Charlotte, North Carolina, 21-year-old Denise Newsom Porch disappeared, leaving behind a life she was just beginning to build. It was July 31, 1975, and Denise, the resident manager of the Yorktown Apartments on Tyvola Road where she also lived, left a note for her husband, Dean, telling him she was showing a vacant unit to a potential renter.
