In the winter of 1983, a young man named Stephen Glenn Bovard, just 20 years old, vanished from Zachary, Louisiana, leaving behind a family desperate for answers and a case shrouded in suspicion. He was last seen on January 31, 1983, at the residence of a friend, Bobby Joe Ferguson. Stephen, who lived with his parents in Baton Rouge and worked as a mechanic, failed to return home, prompting his concerned family to report him missing after several days passed with no word from him. The initial search for Stephen quickly took a dark turn when, on February 3, his truck was discovered abandoned and completely burned in the Tunica Hills area, northwest of St. Francisville, Louisiana. This discovery was the first indication that Stephen’s disappearance was not a simple case of a young man leaving on his own accord, but rather the result of something far more sinister. The investigation into Stephen's disappearance soon uncovered unsettling details about the week leading up to when he was last seen. Just a week prior to vanishing, Stephen had been arrested on serious drug charges. Law enforcement had confiscated a significant amount of cocaine, Quaalude tablets, and marijuana, along with a pistol and a large sum of cash. Faced with the possibility of a lengthy prison sentence, it is believed Stephen may have been considering cooperating with the investigation. This context led investigators to suspect foul play, believing his disappearance was directly linked to his recent arrest and potential cooperation with authorities. The theory that he was murdered to prevent him from talking became the central focus of the case. The investigation quickly centered on Bobby Joe Ferguson, the friend at whose home Stephen was last seen. When authorities searched Ferguson's home, they found bloodstains on a wall and the ceiling, and a section of the carpet had been conspicuously cut out. These findings strongly suggested a violent struggle had taken place. Further implicating Ferguson, another man named Morris Ronald Allen was arrested in March 1983 and charged with being an accessory to second-degree murder. Allen provided a chilling account to investigators, stating that he had helped Ferguson dispose of a body wrapped in a carpet and weighted down with two tire rims. He claimed they dumped the body into the Atchafalaya River near Krotz Springs. Although Allen did not see the victim's face, he saw an arm and knew it was a human body. Authorities conducted sonar searches of the river and located an object they believed could be the body, but difficult conditions prevented divers from ever recovering it. A warrant was issued for Ferguson's arrest for second-degree murder, but he fled before he could be apprehended and charged. Decades later, the disappearance of Stephen Bovard remains an unresolved case, classified as an endangered missing person and a suspected homicide, leaving his loved ones without closure.
