Amber Crum, a 2-year-old girl, disappeared on December 26, 1983, in Dallas, Texas. On that day, she was left in the pickup truck of her mother’s boyfriend, James Britt Monroe, while he briefly went into McDonald's Grocery to run an errand. When he returned just minutes later, Amber was gone. She has not been seen since.
Initial investigations focused on Monroe, who was later charged with Amber's murder based on evidence suggesting she had been abused.
Witnesses had reported seeing bruises on Amber in the weeks leading up to her disappearance. However, during the legal proceedings, Amber’s mother, Stephanie Hughes, recanted her statements, leading to the charges being dropped due to insufficient evidence. Monroe maintained his innocence, and no one has ever been held accountable for Amber's disappearance.
The case went cold until 2007, when convicted child murderer David Elliot Penton became a person of interest in Amber's case, as well as in the disappearances of several other young girls in Texas. However, no direct evidence has linked Penton to Amber's disappearance, and her case remains unsolved.
