In the early afternoon of December 16, 1984, six-year-old Corey Gilbert vanished from Metairie, Louisiana. At the time of his disappearance, Corey was at the Ten-To-Ten grocery store located in the 3200 block of Jefferson Highway. He was reportedly with his cousin, engrossed in playing a video game. In a fleeting moment, his cousin turned away, and when he looked back, Corey was no longer there. The young boy, who was described as being four feet tall and weighing 55 pounds with black hair and brown eyes, was wearing a royal blue muscle shirt with white trim, blue jeans, and either white sneakers with red and blue stripes or blue sneakers with red stripes. A notable detail about his appearance was that he was missing two of his bottom teeth. The events surrounding Corey's disappearance remain unclear, with conflicting accounts of his last known location. While the most widely reported version places him inside the grocery store, some reports suggest he was playing near the Mississippi River with his cousin when he disappeared. This has led to the theory that he may have accidentally fallen into the river and drowned, though a body has never been recovered to substantiate this. Other accounts state he went missing while walking to a neighborhood store. At the time he went missing, Corey resided with his family in the 500 block of South Causeway Boulevard. Decades have passed since Corey Gilbert was last seen, and his case remains an unsolved and painful mystery for his family and community. The Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office has kept the investigation open, but the lack of concrete evidence or new leads has left them with more questions than answers. The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children has created age-progressed photos to show what Corey might look like as an adult, in the hope that someone might recognize him. The conflicting reports of his last moments—whether inside a store or by the river—complicate the efforts to understand what happened. Without a body or any definitive evidence, the theory of him falling into the Mississippi River remains just one of several possibilities, leaving his loved ones in a state of perpetual uncertainty.
