In the autumn of 1986, a 19-year-old woman named Julia Vita Salucka moved from Rockford, Illinois, to Kansas City, Missouri, seeking a new beginning. She shared an apartment with her brother in the 4900 block of Grand Avenue and, while holding a cosmetology license in her home state, took a job at a local Hardee's restaurant.
