Gayle Marie Marks, an 18-year-old woman, disappeared on October 18, 1988, from Stockton, California. She was last seen after visiting the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) to get an identification card, which was later mailed to her home, confirming she had completed her errand. After leaving the DMV, Gayle called her mother but left a voicemail without indicating any distress. She was scheduled to meet a friend and then work her shift at Rick's New York Style Pizza, but she never arrived at either location. Gayle left behind her personal belongings and never collected her last paycheck, raising concerns about foul play.

The case took a darker turn when it was linked to Wesley Shermantine and Loren Herzog, infamously known as the "Speed Freak Killers." The pair, convicted of multiple murders during the 1980s and 1990s, have been suspected of involvement in several missing persons cases, including Gayle's. Shermantine, who is now on death row, has provided information about the locations of some of their victims, though Gayle's body has never been found. Despite extensive investigations and leads, her disappearance remains unsolved, and foul play is strongly suspected.
