In the autumn of 1989, 24-year-old Angela "Angie" Pitz Smith was living in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, when she vanished under deeply troubling circumstances. She was a woman with striking black hair and green eyes, and distinctive scars on her eyebrow, lip, abdomen, and both thighs. When last seen, she was wearing Girbaud jeans, a black and white shirt, and black Reebok sneakers. She also wore an oval-shaped diamond ring and a Gucci watch with a black face. Her life, however, was about to take a dark and mysterious turn, leaving her family with decades of unanswered questions. The official narrative of Angela's disappearance began on November 13, 1989, the day she was last seen at her home on Shady Lake Parkway. Her husband, George "Joey" Smith, reported her missing three days later, telling the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office that Angela had left him on the morning of November 14th after they had an argument the previous night. He claimed she packed two black and gray canvas suitcases and drove away in her 1981 Mercedes. On November 17, George located Angela's car in the long-term parking lot at the New Orleans airport. A parking stub inside the vehicle indicated it had been there since November 13, the very day she was last seen. From the outset, Angela's family was adamant that she would not have just left, and they voiced their suspicions about her husband. They told investigators that Angela had confided in them, stating that if anything ever happened to her, her husband was likely responsible. Her sister, Suzanne Reed, recalled a chilling conversation where Angela directly said, "I want you to know that if anything ever happens to me, I want you to know that Joey did it." These fears were compounded by George's unsettling actions following his wife's disappearance. Just a week after she was last seen, he had all the carpeting in their home professionally cleaned, despite it being less than four months old. The cleaner noted only one dark stain near the bed, which George dismissed as coffee, though the cleaner found it came out with unusual ease. The investigation into Angela's disappearance uncovered a sinister history connected to her husband. Angela was his third wife. In 1985, his second wife, Sheila L. Smith, was murdered in her home. George was later convicted of orchestrating her murder-for-hire. In 1987, another woman who had been living with George was found shot to death in her apartment. While her death was ruled a suicide, police harbored suspicions about the circumstances. Investigators also discovered a $500,000 life insurance policy George had taken out on Angela. Despite the strong suspicions, George Smith was never charged in connection with Angela's disappearance. Angela Pitz Smith was legally declared dead in February of 1993, though her body has never been found. Her husband, George, died in prison in 2000, taking any secrets he may have had about his wife's fate with him to the grave. The case officially remains an unsolved, endangered missing person case, leaving a permanent void in the lives of those who knew and loved Angela.
