On the afternoon of August 15, 1999, 11-year-old Teresa Dean left her home on Lawrence Drive in Macon, Georgia, telling her mother she was going to a friend's house nearby to see some puppies. Her mother recalled her daughter's last words to her were, 'Bye, Momma, I'll see you later.' Teresa, a student at Alexander IV School, was seen by a neighbor walking about 100 yards from her home.
