Annelise Schweickardt, a 68-year-old German citizen, was last seen on April 9, 2003, at her home in Sarasota, Florida. She had been living in the United States since 2001, maintaining her tourist visa by traveling abroad at least once a year. Schweickardt's friends became concerned after being unable to contact her for several weeks, prompting them to report her missing.
Schweickardt had been renting a room in her Sarasota duplex to John Alan Mellquist, but she was in the process of evicting him at the time of her disappearance. When police conducted welfare checks, Mellquist claimed she had left for a family emergency in Germany, but further investigation raised suspicion. In June 2003, Mellquist was found in possession of Schweickardt's car and had used her credit cards and forged checks in the months following her disappearance. Additionally, a search of her home revealed significant evidence of foul play, including bloodstains and evidence of a cleanup attempt.
Despite these findings, Schweickardt's body has never been found. Mellquist was arrested and convicted of second-degree murder in 2016, more than a decade after her disappearance. Her case remains unresolved in terms of locating her remains, but authorities strongly believe she was murdered by Mellquist due to the overwhelming circumstantial evidence.Last Seen: Apr 9, 2003
