Vivian Barrett, a 63-year-old woman, was last seen on January 3, 1989, in Sarasota, Florida. She had been traveling across the country on a 1986 Honda motor scooter, living off her Social Security benefits. By late 1988, she had made her way to Sarasota, where she alternated between staying in state parks and camping in the woods when funds were low. On January 3, 1989, she withdrew $260 from an ATM and later wrote to her family, informing them she planned to travel north.
This was the last contact her family had with her.
Five days later, Barrett's scooter was discovered abandoned along State Road 66 near Sebring, Florida, about 107 miles from where she was last seen. The scooter appeared to have been in an accident, with its license plate and milk crate missing. Barrett's camping gear and other personal belongings were also gone, but there was no sign of her at the scene. Due to her confrontational nature and previous statements about going into the woods if she ever became ill, it is speculated that she may have met with foul play or possibly chosen to disappear into the wilderness.
