In the fall of 2023, the family of 24-year-old Brandon Gomes was plunged into a nightmare when he seemingly vanished. His mother last saw him in person on October 1, 2023. A few days later, he sent a text to a friend expressing a desire to "end his life in nature." This message was a significant cause for alarm, as his family described this behavior as entirely uncharacteristic.
Just before he disappeared, Gomes, a math and physics major at Rutgers University, had been working on a startup and had recently returned from a family vacation in Europe. Concern mounted when police visited his family's home on October 6th, alerted by a friend who had been unable to reach him after the troubling text message.
The days that followed his last text message on October 6th traced a path across the country. Gomes had driven his mother's car from his home in Summit, New Jersey, to Albuquerque, New Mexico. He checked into a Holiday Inn on October 3rd and checked out on October 6th, but the car was left behind at the hotel. The last indication of his whereabouts came from a cell phone ping in the San Ysidro area of Sandoval County, New Mexico, northwest of Albuquerque. After this point, his phone became inactive, cutting off a vital link for those desperately trying to find him. The vast and remote landscape of the San Pedro Parks Wilderness area was mentioned as a possible destination, but without a located vehicle, official search and rescue efforts were hampered.
The search for Brandon Gomes involved law enforcement agencies in both New Jersey and New Mexico, including the Summit Police Department, the Albuquerque Police Department, and the Sandoval County Sheriff's Office. His family, distraught and desperate for answers, hired private investigators and even used helicopter surveillance to aid in the search.
