Hassani Campbell, a 5-year-old boy with cerebral palsy, was last seen on August 10, 2009, in the Rockridge district of Oakland, California. His foster father, Louis Ross, reported that Hassani disappeared from the parking lot behind a shoe store where his foster mother, Jennifer Campbell, worked. According to Ross, he left Hassani by the car while taking Hassani's younger sister inside the store. When he returned, Hassani was gone.
Despite extensive searches in the area, no trace of the boy was found.
Hassani, who wore ankle braces to help him walk, was living with his aunt Jennifer and her fiancé Louis, who were his foster parents. They had been caring for him and his sister, Aaliyah, since December 2008, with plans to adopt them. However, suspicions grew around the foster parents after inconsistencies in their stories and a failed polygraph test by Louis. Investigators discovered a history of domestic issues between the couple, including a text Louis had sent before Hassani's disappearance, threatening to abandon the child.
Despite an arrest of the foster parents on suspicion of murder, both were released due to insufficient evidence. To date, Hassani has not been found, and authorities suspect foul play, believing he may have been murdered.
