On December 29, 1969, 9-year-old Peggy Rahn vanished from Pompano Beach, Florida, along with her friend Wendy Stevenson, age 8. The two girls had gone to the beach separately but met by chance and began playing together. Around 1:00 p.m., they were last seen heading to a nearby parking lot to buy ice cream. A convenience store clerk reported seeing the girls with a man, who bought them ice cream and cigarettes for himself. This man, described as being in his 20s, with sandy blonde hair and driving a blue Chevrolet, became a prime suspect, but authorities were unable to track him down.
Initially, it was suspected that the girls may have drowned, but this theory was ruled out when no bodies were recovered, and Wendy was known to be a good swimmer. Over the years, multiple leads and suspects emerged, including convicted serial killers Kenneth Guy Shilts and Gerard Schaefer. Shilts kept a notebook listing "Peggy and Wendy – Pompano Beach," but his involvement was never proven. Schaefer, suspected of numerous murders, later claimed responsibility for killing the girls, though he was never charged.
Despite extensive investigations, neither Peggy nor Wendy's bodies have been found, and their disappearance remains a mystery. Law enforcement continues to seek any information that could help resolve this decades-old case.
