At the time of his disappearance, David was with his mother's boyfriend, Leon Zerfas, while David’s mother, Genevieve “Genie” Miera, was in Embudo Presbyterian Hospital giving birth to their daughter, Eelia. According to Zerfas, he was last seen outside the hospital with David, though the details surrounding their departure remain unclear.
Zerfas gave various conflicting stories, claiming he had given David away to different families, but none of these claims were substantiated.
When Genevieve returned home two days later, she found that David, along with his clothes and toys, was missing. Zerfas provided multiple accounts about where David had gone, including stories about giving him to a family in Mexico or to a “hippie” family, but none of these leads were verified.
