Summary based on the NamUs case record (MP6204) and 7 other sources
Joseph Hurtado, a 20-month-old boy, was last seen on September 9, 1974, in El Paso, Texas. On the day of his disappearance, Joseph was walking between his parents while his mother washed the family car and his father remained indoors. At some point, both parents assumed Joseph was with the other, but when they realized he was missing, they initiated a search. Joseph was heading to his grandmother’s house, located on the same street, when he vanished.

Witnesses in the neighborhood reported seeing an unidentified blue Ford in the area around the time Joseph disappeared, but it has not been definitively linked to the case. Despite extensive searches, including a thorough examination of the nearby Rio Grande, no trace of Joseph was found, ruling out an accidental drowning. Authorities believe Joseph was abducted and possibly murdered. A suspect was identified, but no indictments were issued when the case was presented to a grand jury. Over the years, the investigation has been hampered by the passage of time, but the case remains open.

Joseph had a birthmark near his right kidney and suffered from club feet, for which he was wearing orthopedic shoes at the time. Without these shoes, his condition could have worsened, leading to severe pigeon-toeing. Age-progressed images have been created to help in the search for Joseph, but his whereabouts remain unknown.
