On a summer day in 1977, seventeen-year-old Yvonne Regler vanished from her post at a Sunoco gas station in Fairview Park, Ohio, leaving behind a mystery that has endured for decades. That morning, Yvonne had reported to her usual job at a Sunoco in North Olmsted, but was unexpectedly transferred to the Fairview Park location on Lorain Road to cover for vacationing employees. She was dropped off by coworkers and was working her shift alone. Throughout the morning, she spoke with friends and family on the phone and seemed to be in good spirits. A coworker brought her lunch around noon, and she was seen by two local teenagers a short time later. The last known contact with Yvonne occurred during a phone call with a friend between 12:30 and 1:00 p.m. During the call, she mentioned a car pulling into the station, leaving, and then returning. The conversation ended with Yvonne telling her friend she had a customer. The last confirmed transaction was a credit card sale at 1:25 p.m., for which Yvonne initialed the receipt. The alarm was not raised until later that afternoon. Between 1:30 and 2:05 p.m., at least two customers and a coffee machine repair person arrived to find the gas station unattended, but none of them contacted the authorities. When Yvonne's relief arrived at approximately 2:45 p.m., he found the station empty and called the manager. A search of the small office revealed a haunting scene: Yvonne's purse, containing a small amount of money, her cigarettes, a book, and her partially eaten lunch were all left untouched. The cash register held about $300, and there were no signs of a robbery or a struggle. Her personal belongings were all there, but Yvonne herself was gone. The Fairview Park Police were called to the scene shortly after. In the initial stages of the investigation, authorities considered the possibility that Yvonne had run away. However, this theory was quickly dismissed as she had no history of such behavior and no apparent troubles at home. As the investigation deepened over the years, the prevailing theory became that she was abducted from the gas station's forecourt, likely while attending to a customer. The case grew cold, but never fully closed. The Fairview Park Police Department has invested thousands of hours into the investigation, receiving assistance from numerous agencies including the FBI, the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI), and the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children. In 2016, a significant development emerged when police announced they had a person of interest, a man already in custody for similar offenses, though he has never been publicly named. Despite this, the case remains unsolved. Decades later, Yvonne Regler's disappearance continues to be an active investigation, a painful and unresolved chapter in the community's history, with law enforcement still appealing to the public for any piece of information that might finally bring answers to her family.
