On a cold winter morning in Syracuse, New York, 28-year-old Angela Elaine Allen spoke with her mother by phone on December 26, 1979. She mentioned being tired and promised to call back later, a promise she would never be able to keep. That brief conversation was the last known contact anyone had with the young mother of two. Angela, described as a friendly and dependable assistant manager at a local J.C. Penney, vanished from her apartment on South Salina Street. At the time of her disappearance, she was wearing a purple dress, a gray coat, and red shoes, and was carrying a red clutch purse. Her mother, concerned after not hearing from her, filed a missing person's report two days later. The investigation into Angela's disappearance soon focused on her husband, Hubert James "Mad Dog" Allen. Authorities found it suspicious that he attempted to collect her last paycheck from her employer after she went missing. According to his statement to the police, Angela had left their apartment to go shopping the day after Christmas and simply never came back. He claimed she had taken $11,000 in cash and that he believed she had left him and was still alive. However, investigators did not believe Angela left on her own, a sentiment shared by her family who knew her as a devoted mother. Years would pass without any resolution in Angela's case, but new information came to light through a separate and tragic series of events. Hubert Allen's girlfriend at the time of Angela's disappearance, Lorraine Marshall, began cooperating with investigators in 1982. Marshall revealed that Hubert had once told her he had "accidentally" killed Angela and asked for her help to hide the body, a statement he later dismissed as a joke. She also recalled him having mud-caked boots around the time Angela vanished. Tragically, in 1985, before she could provide further testimony, Marshall and her six-year-old son with Hubert were murdered. Hubert was convicted of their murders and sentenced to fifty years to life in prison. Authorities believe he killed them to silence Marshall's cooperation in Angela's case. Despite being the prime suspect, Hubert Allen has never been charged in connection with his wife's disappearance. Police have theorized possible burial sites, including the Onondaga Indian Nation territory or the Allied Chemical salt pits, places the couple used to frequent. In 1990, Angela's mother's attempt to have her declared legally dead resulted in her being declared legally missing instead, with her estate, including a life insurance policy, distributed to her two daughters. The case of Angela Allen remains an unresolved and sorrowful mystery, leaving her loved ones without answers for decades.
