In the autumn of 1981, thirteen-year-old Amy Marie Yachimec was living with her family in an apartment complex in Phoenix, Arizona. On the evening of November 6th, the eighth-grader was last seen by her family at approximately 10:00 p.m.. Described as a fun and sweet girl, Amy was wearing a blue terry cloth short-sleeved shirt, maroon slacks, and blue slip-on shoes.. She also had on a thin gold chain necklace and gold post earrings.. Later that evening, a 25-year-old neighbor named Raymond Diaz and his girlfriend reportedly picked Amy up to take her to a party.. Before she left, Amy woke her younger sister to see if she wanted to come along, but her sister declined, and Amy went on without her.. That would be the last time her family ever saw her. The events that followed Amy’s departure were deeply unsettling and pointed towards a grim conclusion. Later that same night, Diaz and his girlfriend appeared at the Yachimec's apartment door. Diaz was naked, and his girlfriend had to get a blanket to cover him as he bizarrely asked Amy's parents what was wrong, even though they were not yet aware that their daughter was missing.. The investigation into Amy's disappearance would later reveal that the trio had gone to the home of Diaz's cousin, where Diaz expressed a desire to have sex with Amy.. His cousin refused to allow it in his home, and the three left.. A car that Diaz had borrowed that night was later turned over to the police, and hairs consistent with Amy's were found inside.. In 1988, an anonymous tip led police to believe Amy had been murdered and buried in the desert, shifting the case from a missing person to a probable homicide.. For many years, Amy's case remained cold, a painful uncertainty for her family. However, with advancements in forensic technology, a breakthrough finally came. In March 2015, DNA testing was performed on blood evidence that had been collected from the borrowed car back in 1981.. The tests confirmed the blood belonged to Amy Yachimec, directly linking Raymond Diaz to her disappearance.. In October 2018, Diaz, who was already incarcerated for other violent crimes including kidnapping and sexual assault, was arrested and charged with the first-degree murder of Amy.. In 2021, Raymond Diaz pleaded guilty to her murder.. Despite this legal resolution, Amy's body has never been recovered, leaving her loved ones without a final resting place for her..
