On a snowy day in February 1982, six-year-old Kelly Hollan Jr. disappeared from his front yard in the Pinetree Hollow area of Knott County, Kentucky. Due to a heavy snowstorm, school had been canceled, and Kelly, after repeatedly asking his mother, Judy Moore, was allowed to go outside and play around 11 a.m. He was dressed in a blue winter coat with a hood and blue jeans. Kelly was a small boy for his age, with brown hair and blue eyes.
He was born with a cleft palate, which resulted in a noticeable speech impediment and a scar on the left side of his face between his nose and upper lip. His mother had cautioned him not to leave the yard before she went back inside their home.
Judy Moore stated that she last saw her son playing in the yard at approximately 4:00 p.m. Shortly after, she went to a neighbor's house to take a phone call, as she did not have a phone of her own. When she returned, Kelly was gone. Initially, she assumed he had gone to a friend's house to watch television, a common occurrence. However, when she went to retrieve him for dinner around 6:00 p.m., she learned that he had never been there. Panic began to set in, but reports indicate that she was not able to contact the police until around midnight. The official search was further delayed and did not begin in earnest until the following morning.
The initial investigation was hampered by the severe weather conditions. The Knott County Rescue Squad and later the Kentucky State Police were dispatched to search for the missing boy. The prevailing theory at the time was that Kelly had likely wandered off and succumbed to the harsh elements, perhaps falling into one of the numerous abandoned mines in the rural area. An extensive two-week search of the hollow and surrounding areas yielded no trace of Kelly or his clothing. Over the years, the investigation has explored various leads and theories. At one point, Judy Moore's concrete porch was dug up following a tip that Kelly's body was buried there, but nothing was found. The case eventually turned from a missing person investigation to a suspected abduction.
