In the quiet town of Newcomerstown, Ohio, the evening of March 16, 1982, marked the beginning of a lasting mystery with the disappearance of 19-year-old Susan Diane Wolff-Cappel. After completing her shift at the Thompson's IGA supermarket, Susan was seen walking towards her mother's car in the parking lot. It was there that an older model, blue car approached her. A coworker witnessed Susan speaking for a few moments with the male driver before she walked around to the passenger side and got into the vehicle. The car then drove away, and Susan has not been seen or heard from since. At the time she vanished, she was the mother of an 18-month-old son and was wearing her work attire: brown corduroy jeans, a white turtleneck sweater with brown stripes, a red smock with "IGA" on the front, and reddish-brown oxfords. She was also carrying a navy blue nylon windbreaker. At the time of her disappearance, Susan was going through a divorce and was in the midst of a custody battle for her young son, Damin. She had recently moved back in with her parents and was working two jobs to support herself and prepare for a future with her son. Friends and family described her as being in good spirits on the day she went missing, hopeful about the upcoming custody hearing. She had plans to spend the following day with Damin. The suddenness of her departure left her loved ones in a state of shock and confusion, as she left behind all her personal belongings, including her paychecks and identification. The circumstances surrounding her getting into the unidentified car have been the focal point of the investigation for decades, with few answers emerging. Over the years, the investigation into Susan's disappearance has faced numerous challenges. A significant setback occurred when a county grand jury's investigation records were misplaced. Despite the passage of time, her family has never stopped searching for answers, holding onto hope for her return. There have been theories and potential leads, including a reported sighting by a Greyhound bus driver in 1983 who believed he gave a ride to a woman resembling Susan from Cleveland to Newcomerstown. However, this sighting was never officially confirmed. The case was officially reopened in 2006, and foul play is suspected. Though decades have passed, the case of Susan Wolff-Cappel remains an open and haunting cold case for the Tuscarawas County Sheriff's Office, a painful reminder of a young mother who vanished without a trace.
