Jennifer Sophia Marteliz, a 7-year-old girl from Tampa, Florida, vanished on November 15, 1982, while walking home from Shaw Elementary School. Around 3:00 p.m., she was only one block away from her home on 15th Street and 109th Avenue when she asked a friend to watch her as she completed her walk. The friend looked away for just a moment, and when they turned back, Jennifer had disappeared. Despite extensive searches and investigations, Jennifer has not been seen since.
At the time of her disappearance, Jennifer was wearing a pink or orange dress with yellow flowers, maroon ballet shoes, and gold heart-shaped earrings. She had distinct physical characteristics, including several beauty marks on her face and body, a cleft chin, and large, chipped front teeth. Described as friendly and bright, Jennifer's disappearance has deeply affected her family and the community.
In the initial investigation, suspicion briefly fell on family members due to custody disputes between Jennifer’s divorced parents. However, after thorough scrutiny, authorities cleared her family of involvement. One prominent suspect, Thomas Welnicki, a family acquaintance with a criminal history, came forward with a so-called "psychic vision" about Jennifer’s fate, describing how she was abducted and murdered by two men. Investigators believed his account might be more of a confession, especially since Welnicki resembled one of the individuals described in his vision. Despite his failed polygraph test, no charges were ever brought against him due to insufficient evidence.
Another suspect, Steven Visnosky, was linked to the case due to witness reports of suspicious activity involving his vehicle near the scene of Jennifer’s disappearance. Although he remained a person of interest for many years, Visnosky passed away in 1992 without being officially charged, and no physical evidence definitively connected him to Jennifer’s abduction.
Jennifer’s case remains unsolved to this day, and authorities continue to seek information.
