Paul is described as a white male, between 5'9' and 5'10' tall, and weighing between 155 and 165 pounds. He has blue eyes and straight, thick, short blond to strawberry blond hair. He wore a medium-length beard and mustache that was darker and redder than his head hair. His physical characteristics include metal pins in one knee and a slightly pigeon-toed walk. He has several tattoos: faded emojis on his fingers, the words 'Stop me, I'm a runaway' on his left forearm, and 'Might as well' tattooed on his neck. When he left his home, he was wearing tan long pants and a red and brown plaid flannel shirt. There was a possible, but unconfirmed, sighting of Paul on November 13, 2023, where he was thought to be in an unfamiliar gray Toyota sedan, wearing faded blue jeans and a blue jersey with 'Carolina 89' on the front. However, the license plate of this vehicle did not match the one seen at the convenience store on the day he disappeared.
The Durham Police Department investigated the disappearance of Paul Holmes. The initial details of him withdrawing cash and being involved in a drug transaction created immediate concern for his well-being. The subsequent silence, with no use of his bank accounts or phone, was out of character and intensified the search efforts.
