Cindy Lee Smith, 26, was last seen on April 3, 1987, in Winter Haven, Florida, where she lived with her boyfriend, William Donald Taylor, and her six-year-old son from a previous marriage. Smith had reportedly planned to leave Taylor and move in with her parents, but she never followed through with the move. On the day of her disappearance, she was seen getting into Taylor’s car after leaving her job at a K-Mart store.
Taylor later claimed that she left with an unknown man, stating she was going to Daytona Beach, but she has never been heard from again.
Smith’s disappearance raised concerns quickly, especially after her employer called her family to report that she had not shown up for work on April 6. Her family was frustrated with the investigation, as they felt it was delayed. A month after she vanished, her father discovered a bloodstained mattress in the home Smith shared with Taylor. Although police tested the mattress, only blood type testing was available at the time, and the evidence was discarded in the 1990s.
Taylor, who passed away in 2007, was considered a person of interest in her disappearance, though he was never charged.
