In the months leading up to her disappearance, Carolyn had been involved in a tumultuous relationship with her seventh husband, Gerald Long, whom she had married earlier that year. Their relationship was marked by domestic violence, and Carolyn had sought refuge at a women's shelter shortly before she went missing.
She had planned to leave Gerald and even registered as an informant with the Drug Enforcement Administration, claiming he was involved in drug activities.
On September 5, 1991, Carolyn checked out of the women's shelter and was last seen with Gerald at their home. Her final communications, including a phone call to her brother, suggested she wanted to leave but was too frightened to do so. Gerald later claimed she had left for Wichita, Kansas, but she never arrived. Foul play is suspected in Carolyn's disappearance, as she left behind her truck and belongings, and soon after she vanished, Gerald moved another woman into their home. Authorities believe Gerald was involved in her disappearance, but he passed away in 2001 without being formally charged.
