Leigh Occhi, a 13-year-old girl from Tupelo, Mississippi, disappeared on the morning of August 27, 1992, amid the chaos of Hurricane Andrew. Leigh was last seen by her mother, Vickie Felton, at around 7:35 a.m. before Vickie left for work. Leigh was supposed to attend a school open house later that day, and her grandmother was scheduled to pick her up. However, when her mother called home around 8:30 a.m., Leigh did not answer. Vickie returned home to find the house unlocked, the garage door open, and no sign of Leigh. Inside the home, bloodstains were found in multiple areas, suggesting a struggle had taken place, but there was no forced entry.
Leigh’s nightgown, which she had been wearing when her mother left, was found bloodied in her room, and other items such as her glasses and some clothing were missing. Despite immediate search efforts, no trace of Leigh was found. Weeks later, her glasses were mysteriously mailed back to the house from a nearby town, further complicating the investigation. Police believe this was an attempt to mislead the investigation.
Though several people, including family members and acquaintances, have been investigated, no one has been charged, and the case remains unsolved. Foul play is suspected, and while Leigh’s mother passed multiple polygraph tests, her actions and those of others continue to raise questions. Authorities still consider her disappearance an active investigation.
