Jose Francisco Fuentes Pereira, a 7-year-old boy from El Salvador, went missing on December 7, 1993, near the U.S.-Mexico border in San Ysidro, California. Nicknamed "Paquito," Jose was traveling with his siblings and aunt, attempting to reunite with his mother in the United States after a long journey from El Salvador. The family had made the dangerous trip with the assistance of smugglers, or "coyotes," crossing through Guatemala and Mexico before reaching the U.S. border.
