He called home asking for a ride, but his older brother refused to wake their mother, who was sleeping at the time. Nicholas was never seen or heard from again. Given his troubled history, which included behavior issues and a court hearing the next day, his family initially believed he had run away.
However, he left behind his belongings, which made this theory less likely as time passed.
Three years later, a man claiming to be Nicholas was found in Spain and reunited with the Barclay family. However, suspicions soon arose as the boy had changed in appearance and demeanor, and DNA testing revealed that the individual was not Nicholas but Frédéric Bourdin, a French con artist. Bourdin had assumed Nicholas’s identity, leading to further investigations into Nicholas's disappearance. Although there have been no definitive answers, some theories suggest possible family involvement, but no solid evidence has surfaced to prove what truly happened to Nicholas.
