According to Henderson, Hopkins claimed that Jessica was pregnant with his child and that they were on their way to Niagara Falls to get married. Jessica's mother later refuted these claims, stating there was a medical basis to know her daughter was not pregnant and that she was not dating Hopkins. During the drive, Jessica was reportedly quiet with her head down. The group made a stop for the night in Cloverdale, Indiana, checking into a Dollar Inn.
The events that unfolded at the Indiana motel remain shrouded in mystery and suspicion. Henderson checked into a room separate from Hopkins and Jessica. During the night, he reported hearing loud noises from their room, which he described as sounding like a body being thrown against a wall. When he inquired, Hopkins allegedly dismissed the sounds as those of sexual activity. By the next morning, both Jessica and Hopkins were gone, and Henderson's car was also missing. The vehicle was discovered abandoned nearly two weeks later in Compton, California. Witnesses in the Compton area later reported seeing Hopkins with a young woman who matched Jessica's description. Hopkins eventually returned to Missouri in the spring or early summer of 1996, but he was alone.
When authorities were finally able to question Hopkins in November 1996, he denied harming Jessica. He provided a conflicting account, claiming he last saw her at a hotel in Hollywood, California, with a man known only as 'Capone.' The address he gave for the hotel turned out to be a vacant lot. Over the years, Hopkins allegedly told several individuals that he had murdered Jessica. The case took a tragic and definitive turn in April 2008, when Hopkins shot and killed his wife before taking his own life. He was never charged in connection with Jessica's disappearance.
