Lora Ann Gabbert, a 29-year-old woman, was last seen on December 1, 1997, in Pecos, Texas. She lived with her boyfriend, Chris Bigham, and her three children. According to Bigham, Gabbert had planned to travel to Dallas to visit a friend and allegedly purchased a Greyhound bus ticket. However, it was later confirmed that no ticket was bought. Shortly after her disappearance, Bigham moved to Washington state, taking one of Gabbert’s children with him and returning the others to their fathers.
In 1998, Bigham confessed to Gabbert's murder, claiming she had pointed a gun at him, which led him to shoot her in self-defense. He described a gruesome process of disposing of her body, including burning her remains in a barrel and dumping the container in the Pecos River. A barrel was later recovered from the river containing human remains, but due to the condition of the bones, conclusive DNA testing was not possible. Despite Bigham's claim that Gabbert committed suicide, he was convicted of her murder in 1999.
