Summary based on the NamUs case record (MP6593) and 11 other sources
In the fall of 1999, seven-year-old Karla Carolina Rodriguez was a young girl living in Las Vegas, Nevada. Having moved with her family from Mexico, she was still learning English and had a small mole above her right eyebrow and visible cavities. On the evening of October 20, 1999, Karla was last seen in her neighborhood near the Stratosphere Tower. She had gone to a neighbor's house to play with their son, but the neighbor told her it was getting late and that she should go home. She was seen playing alone outside for about fifteen minutes before she left on her bicycle. Karla never made it back to her house. Her family did not report her missing until the following morning, assuming she had spent the night at a friend's house. When she didn't arrive at school, the principal contacted the police, and a search began.

The investigation into Karla's disappearance involved both the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department and the FBI. An early theory centered on a family debt, but the relative involved was eventually cleared as a suspect. Investigators then began to believe she was taken by someone outside of her family. A significant lead emerged when two bloodhounds independently tracked Karla's scent to a nearby apartment inhabited by two brothers. The apartment was described as filthy, except for the bathroom, which was unusually clean and smelled of disinfectant. Blood spatter was found in the bathroom, but there was not enough of a sample to obtain a DNA profile. Despite this, police could not find direct evidence linking the brothers to Karla's disappearance.

Over the years, the investigation has explored other potential suspects, including convicted serial killer Curtis Dean Anderson. A receipt found in Anderson's car placed him in Las Vegas on the day Karla disappeared, at a store just over a mile from her home. Anderson, who died in prison in 2007, had created maps with 'X' marks on them, suggesting locations where he may have buried evidence related to his crimes. Searches of these sites, however, did not yield any evidence connected to Karla's case. Despite numerous leads and ongoing efforts by law enforcement, no one has ever been charged in connection with her disappearance. The case remains an open and painful mystery for her family, who continue to hold out hope for answers. The disappearance of Karla Rodriguez is a somber reminder of a young life interrupted, leaving a family with enduring grief and a community with unanswered questions.
