In the late afternoon of March 30, 2001, 28-year-old Danielle Marie Day was seen for the last time at her brother's girlfriend's house in Lindenwold, New Jersey. After that day, her family and friends never heard from her again. It was not unusual for Danielle to be out of contact with her family for extended periods, so they were not immediately alarmed. However, as weeks turned into more than a month without any word, her brother officially reported her missing on May 15, 2001. At the time she vanished, Danielle was a mother to two young children, a son and a daughter, who were in foster care but whom she visited occasionally.
Danielle was born in Maine and, around the time of her disappearance, was working as an exotic dancer at the now-closed Fantasy Show Bar in Mount Ephraim, New Jersey. She was known to frequent areas in Brooklyn, New York; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; and Camden, New Jersey.
Danielle was also battling an addiction to heroin and crack cocaine, a factor that her family and law enforcement believe may have played a role in her disappearance. Her life was described as high-risk, and she was also involved in sex work. Her daughter has expressed a belief that her mother could have become a victim of human trafficking. Physically, Danielle is described as a Caucasian female with brown hair and brown eyes, standing at 5'4' and weighing around 110 pounds. She has two distinctive tattoos: a rose on her left breast and a devil on her left buttock.
The investigation into Danielle Day's disappearance has been fraught with challenges from the beginning due to the limited information available. Over the years, the case has been passed to new detectives as others have retired, with investigators re-interviewing family members and witnesses in hopes of uncovering a new lead.
