On March 28, 2002, a 23-year-old student named Daniel Mazilu was last seen by his brother at their family's home in Silver Lake, Ohio, at approximately 2:30 in the afternoon. Living with his parents and brother on Graham Road, Daniel departed the residence without mentioning his destination. It was later determined that he made a stop and a purchase in the Spicertown area of Akron, Ohio, but after that, all communication from him ceased. Two days after he was last seen, his brother officially reported him missing to the authorities. At the time of his disappearance, Daniel was between jobs and was being supported by his parents while he attended the University of Akron. He did not have a bank account, credit cards, or any significant amount of cash with him, which made a voluntary long-distance trip seem unlikely to his family. The investigation into Daniel's disappearance took a perplexing turn in early April 2002 when his car, a white 1992 Plymouth Duster, was discovered abandoned. The vehicle was found unlocked and undamaged on a runaway truck ramp located on a major highway near the border of West Virginia and Maryland. This discovery was particularly baffling to his family, as Daniel had no known ties to West Virginia and had never expressed any desire to travel there. Inside the car, which his family described as his pride and joy that he kept meticulously clean, investigators found his student parking pass. Notably, the license plate, with the Ohio number COT 3588, had been removed from the vehicle. Law enforcement officials have suggested that the location where the car was left seemed deliberately chosen to prevent its quick discovery. Daniel was described by his family as being very close to his mother and had not shown any signs of wanting to leave home or having any significant problems in his life. His interests were diverse and included physical fitness and the unique hobby of racing carrier pigeons. Born in Romania, he was raised in the Eastern Orthodox Church but had developed an interest in Judaism before he went missing. The circumstances surrounding Daniel Mazilu's disappearance remain unclear, and with no evidence of foul play definitively found, his case is considered a missing person investigation. Despite the passage of time and the efforts of law enforcement, there has been no trace of Daniel since 2002, leaving his family with unanswered questions and an enduring sense of loss.
