Stephanie left notes for her husband and parents, indicating that she intended to drive into the Ohio River due to personal struggles.
On April 19, 2002, Stephanie and her two children were stopped by a police officer near a boat ramp to the Ohio River in Indiana, but they were never seen again. Despite extensive searches of the river at the time, no sign of the family or their vehicle was found for nearly two decades.
In 2021, new sonar technology led investigators to the discovery of Stephanie's vehicle submerged in the Ohio River near Aurora, Indiana. Human remains found inside were identified as Stephanie's, but no remains of John or Kristina were located, and their fate remains unknown. The case is still open, with authorities seeking any further information that might help locate the children.
