In the early summer of 2003, 35-year-old Shane William Neuhaus vanished from the Highland County, Ohio area. The specific details surrounding the night he went missing are unclear, though it is known that he was in the company of a friend, Shawn A. Deardroff, in east Hillsboro. At the time of his disappearance, Shane's father reported that his son was having "problems with people" and had expressed a desire to carry a gun for protection. His mother also acknowledged that her son had started down the "wrong path" and was involved in risky activities. Shane was described as a white male, 5'8" tall and weighing 180 pounds, with brown hair and blue eyes. The investigation into Shane's disappearance soon uncovered troubling connections. In March 2005, Shawn Deardroff was charged with felonious assault against Shane after admitting to an altercation with him around the time he went missing. However, investigators did not believe Deardroff was responsible for Shane's death. Instead, their focus turned to another individual, Michael Fogt, who was considered a major suspect in the case. Evidence was discovered linking Fogt to Neuhaus, who had been a former employee and associate at Fogt's auto repair shop. Fogt was already under scrutiny for other serious crimes and would eventually be convicted for the murders of two women, Cynthia A. Pickens and Martha A. Behymer. While incarcerated, Fogt reportedly provided a location where Shane's body could be found, but a search of the area yielded no results. Despite the suspicions and circumstantial evidence, Michael Fogt has never been charged in connection with Shane Neuhaus's disappearance, and he has not admitted to any involvement. Shane's body has never been found, leaving his family without closure. The case received limited media attention, which has been attributed to Shane being an adult male from a rural area and his involvement in a high-risk lifestyle. Over the years, hope of finding him alive has faded for his family, who now only wish to know what happened to him. The disappearance of Shane Neuhaus remains an unsolved case, shadowed by the violent history of a convicted murderer and the lingering questions of what truly transpired in the summer of 2003.
