Mark Douglas Jackson, 35, was last seen on June 27, 2004, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He had spent the evening at a dance club with a visiting friend, John Bass, before returning to his apartment at Drake Towers around 4:15 a.m. Security cameras captured their entry into the building. Bass later reported that he went to sleep around 5:00 a.m., but when he woke up, Jackson was gone.
Jackson left behind nearly all his personal belongings, including his phone, keys, and medication, though his wallet, passport, and credit cards were missing. Strangely, his email and voicemail were accessed hours after he disappeared, though no transactions were made on his bank accounts.
Jackson’s disappearance is considered highly suspicious. Investigators noted that it would have been out of character for him to leave without his phone, and they found drugs, including GHB and crystal methamphetamine, in his apartment. Security footage malfunctioned shortly after Jackson returned home, and authorities believe he intended to return but was prevented by unknown circumstances.
The case shares some eerie similarities with other disappearances from the same area, including two men from 1988 who were also gay and had connections to drugs. Although there has been speculation about connections between these cases, authorities have found no conclusive links.
