On a summer day, June 27, 2004, 17-year-old Craig Frear vanished from Scotia, New York. He was a popular high school junior, co-captain of the soccer team, and had aspirations of studying elementary education in college. That morning, he left his family's home, seemingly on his way to his job at a local grocery store. However, his parents would soon discover that Craig had been fired from his job a month prior and had been pretending to go to work. The discovery of this secret set in motion a chain of events that would end with Craig walking into a wooded area behind an apartment complex, never to be seen again. He was last seen wearing blue jean shorts, a white long-sleeved t-shirt, and white Adidas sneakers with black stripes. He also wore a yellow gold chain with a St. Christopher medal. The day Craig disappeared, his mother, Veronica, went to the grocery store and realized her son wasn't there. She later found him with a friend and confronted him. After a conversation with his mother, Craig was later seen near the Cambridge Manor apartments. It's believed that upon seeing his father's car nearby, he abruptly changed direction and walked into the woods. He left his own car in the apartment complex parking lot. When he didn't return home that evening, his family began to search for him, and his mother reported him missing. In the years that followed, law enforcement conducted numerous searches of the woods and the nearby Mohawk River, utilizing search dogs, but found no trace of Craig. Investigators have looked into various possibilities, including that he was struck by a train on the nearby tracks or that he was suicidal, but have found no evidence to support these theories. Despite the passage of time, Craig Frear's case remains open and is actively being investigated by the New York State Police, who took over the case from local agencies in 2006. Over the years, they have followed up on hundreds of leads and conducted numerous interviews. There was a potential sighting of Craig in the passenger seat of a car a few days after his disappearance, but it could not be confirmed. Authorities have stated they do not believe he is alive, as it is uncharacteristic of him to not contact his family. His Social Security number has not been used since he vanished. The lack of concrete evidence has made this a haunting mystery for his family and the community. His father sadly passed away in 2017 without ever knowing what happened to his son. Craig's mother and brother continue to advocate for him, hoping that one day they will have answers about his disappearance.
