Garrett Bardsley, a 12-year-old Boy Scout, disappeared on August 20, 2004, while on a camping trip near Cuberant Lake in Utah's Uinta Mountains. Early that morning, Garrett and his father were fishing when Garrett’s shoes and socks got wet. He decided to return to the campsite, about 150 yards away, to change into dry clothes. Despite walking a familiar path, Garrett never made it back to camp.
His father, who had watched him head off, became concerned after Garrett failed to return and quickly began searching for him, but Garrett was nowhere to be found.
A large-scale search involving hundreds of volunteers, dogs, and search-and-rescue teams ensued, but little evidence emerged. The only clue was a Nike sock found in a boulder field, about half a mile from where Garrett was last seen. Despite extensive searches, no further traces of Garrett, including the ice-fishing pole he was carrying, were found. The rugged terrain and cold temperatures, which dropped to near freezing on the night of his disappearance, raised concerns that he may have succumbed to the elements.
Authorities eventually concluded that Garrett likely got lost and may have died from exposure, though other possibilities, such as an animal attack or abduction, were considered but ruled unlikely.
