On the afternoon of January 26, 2007, 92-year-old John 'Buck' Kueper was at his usual spot, Buddy's Bar, located in the 100 block of east Highway 82 in Whetstone, Arizona. A well-liked regular, he lived in a trailer park just a short distance behind the establishment. That day, he mentioned to fellow patrons that he planned to drive his distinctive yellow and brown 1985 Dodge half-ton pickup truck to Tombstone for an event at the American Legion.
